Pieve di San Giovanni a Campiglia Marittima

Pieve di SAN GIOVANNI

Built in 1173 on a hill just outside the town walls, the Pieve di San Giovanni is one of the finest examples of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. Designed by master builder Matteo, the church features typical elements of 12th-century Pisan style, such as sculpted portals and an architrave with symbolic scenes of boar hunting.

Engraved on the façade is the mysterious palindrome “Sator arepo tenet opera rotas”, found on many medieval buildings. Restored in 2011, the church stands atop an ancient monumental cemetery with nearly 500 burials and, thanks to archaeological excavations, has revealed evidence of even earlier human presence.

In addition to its historical and artistic value, the church also hosted the music festival “I Concerti della Pieve”, making it a lively and evocative cultural venue.

Stemmi sulla facciata del Palazzo Pretorio di Campiglia Marittima

Palazzo Pretorio

Among the most iconic buildings in Campiglia Marittima, the 13th-century Palazzo Pretorio stands out for its grandeur and historical significance.

Originally the seat of the Captain of Justice, the building has undergone many modifications over the centuries, leaving visible traces on its façade, where the coats of arms of the Florentine governors were placed over those of the former Pisan rulers.

Topped by a clock tower with a bell, today the palace is a lively cultural hub: it houses the Historical Archive, the Children’s Library “Il Palazzo dei Racconti”, the Tourist Information Office, the Carlo Guarnieri Museum, and spaces for temporary exhibitions. Inside, you’ll also find the Wedding and Civil Union Hall, dedicated to Valentino Polidori and enriched by large paintings by the woodcut artist Guarnieri, who had strong ties to the village.

Rocca di Campiglia Marittima illuminata di sera

Rocca di Campiglia Marittima

Located at the highest point of the village, 281 meters above sea level, the Rocca di Campiglia is a fascinating medieval complex that bears witness to over a thousand years of history.

Built in the 12th century by the Counts of della Gherardesca, the Rocca includes the cassero (keep), an ancient cistern, a crenellated wall with a mullioned window, and a 1930s aqueduct.

Following a careful restoration, it was reopened to the public in 2008 and now houses the Rocca Museum, which displays archaeological finds discovered during excavations—among them, an almost intact cuirass, a helmet, and a collection of weapons. Educational panels illustrate the history of medieval Campiglia, offering visitors an immersive look into life in that era.

The complex is surrounded by a park enclosed by fortified walls with bastions, offering breathtaking views over the Val di Cornia.

Teatro dei Concordi

Inaugurated in 1867, the Teatro dei Concordi is an elegant Italian-style theater with an elliptical layout and three tiers of boxes, symbolizing the vibrant cultural life of Campiglia Marittima.

Originally able to host up to 600 spectators, the theater went through a century of transformations: closures, reopenings, renovations, and changes in ownership, until it was purchased by the Municipality in 1974. After a major restoration, it reopened in 1990 with a new look and a seating capacity of about 200. Further upgrades between 2015 and 2017 improved its technical systems and facilities.

Today, managed by the Nuovo Teatro dell’Aglio association in collaboration with Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo, it is a dynamic cultural hub that hosts theatrical performances, festivals, and events, serving as a true point of reference for the entire community.
