MUBIA – Geo Museum of the Biancane

Where the Earth tells its story

MUBIA – The Geo Museum of the Biancane is a museum dedicated to geodiversity, housed inside the former Monterotondo Uno geothermal power plant, in the heart of the Biancane of Monterotondo Marittimo.

Created as a tribute to a territory that played a pioneering role in the history of geothermal energy—from the discovery of boric acid to the production of electricity—the museum invites visitors to discover the Earth through its transformations. Here, the main protagonist is Gaia, the Earth itself, telling its story through rocks, minerals and the natural phenomena that have shaped one of Tuscany’s most extraordinary landscapes.

A journey that helps visitors understand how geology influences the landscape, ecosystems and biodiversity that characterise this unique environment.

GeoNave: a journey beneath the Earth’s surface

At the heart of the museum is the GeoNave, an impressive spherical structure that takes visitors on a virtual journey towards the centre of the Earth.

Multimedia installations, interactive displays and geological specimens reveal how rocks and minerals were formed, explain why the ground of the Biancane is so hot and allow visitors to discover the natural processes that generate geothermal energy.

The exhibition also explores the area’s most significant minerals, the formation of sulphur crystals and the geological features that make this geosite truly unique.

The Biancane Park and the geological trail

The museum experience continues outdoors in the Biancane Park, where geodiversity reveals itself through a spectacular landscape of steam vents, fumaroles, warm rocks and ground coloured in striking shades of white and ochre.

The geological walking trail allows visitors to safely observe these geothermal phenomena while exploring a landscape often compared to Dante’s Inferno, leading to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the geosite, Monterotondo Marittimo and the Metalliferous Hills.

Together, the museum and the park create a single experience that combines scientific interpretation with direct observation of one of Tuscany’s most fascinating natural environments.
