Petra
An icon of wine architecture
In the heart of the Val di Cornia, Petra is much more than a winery: it is a place where architecture, landscape and wine exist in perfect harmony.
Created from the vision of Vittorio Moretti and designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, Petra takes its name from the Italian word for stone, paying tribute to the land that hosts it. Clad in Pietra di Prun, the winery emerges from the hillside through bold yet essential forms, blending naturally into the landscape rather than dominating it.
Much of the winery extends underground, taking advantage of the hill’s naturally stable temperature and humidity to accompany the wine through every stage of its evolution.

A winery where light and gravity become part of the winemaking process
Petra’s architecture is not only visually striking—it was designed to enhance the production process itself.
Winemaking relies on gravity, minimising mechanical intervention and preserving the integrity of the grapes throughout every stage of vinification.
Large glass walls create a constant dialogue between the interior spaces and the surrounding countryside, while the building’s vertical design, underground galleries and natural light have earned Petra the nickname “The Cathedral of Wine.”
Every space reflects the meeting of engineering, nature and the culture of winemaking.

A territory expressed through wine
Over the years, Petra has developed a winemaking style that is increasingly rooted in the identity of the Tuscan Coast.
The organically farmed vineyards grow on mineral-rich soils shaped by millions of years of geological evolution and influenced by the Mediterranean climate, sea breezes and the intense light reflected from the nearby sea.
The winery embraces the concept of epigenetics: although the vine’s DNA remains unchanged, it gradually adapts to the environment in which it grows, producing wines that become increasingly faithful expressions of their territory over time.
To enhance this natural evolution, Petra favours fermentation in small vessels, gentle extraction, longer macerations and carefully controlled ageing to preserve freshness, elegance and aromatic precision.

Wines that express the Tuscan Coast
Petra’s wines are created to express the authentic character of this unique territory.
The winery’s signature labels include Hebo, aged exclusively in concrete, together with Quercegobbe and Petra, which mature in the underground barrel cellar designed by Mario Botta and represent the stylistic evolution of the estate.
Alongside these wines is the Belvento collection, inspired by the coastal landscapes of the Maremma and the Mediterranean spirit of Tuscany.
A visit to Petra offers a unique experience where contemporary architecture, wine culture and extraordinary landscapes come together, revealing one of the most iconic wineries on the Tuscan Coast.
