Pieve di San Giovanni
Built in 1173 on a hill just outside the medieval walls, the Pieve di San Giovanni is one of the finest examples of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. Designed by the master builder Matteo, the church features characteristic elements of 12th-century Pisan architecture, including finely carved portals and a lintel decorated with symbolic wild boar hunting scenes.
Engraved on the façade is the mysterious palindrome “Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas”, found on several medieval buildings throughout Europe. Restored in 2011, the church stands above an ancient monumental cemetery containing almost 500 burials, while archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of even earlier settlements.
Beyond its historical and artistic importance, the church also hosts the Concerti della Pieve music festival, making it one of Campiglia Marittima’s most iconic cultural landmarks.

Palazzo Pretorio
One of the village’s most important historic buildings, the 13th-century Palazzo Pretorio stands out for both its imposing architecture and its central role in the history of Campiglia Marittima.
Originally the seat of the Captain of Justice, its façade still displays the coats of arms of the Florentine podestà, superimposed over those of the previous Pisan rulers, reflecting the village’s rich historical past.
Today the palace houses the Historical Archive, the Children’s Library Il Palazzo dei Racconti, the Tourist Office, the Carlo Guarnieri Museum, temporary exhibition spaces and the Civil Wedding Hall.

Rocca di Campiglia Marittima
Standing at the highest point of the village, 281 metres above sea level, the Rocca is the symbol of Campiglia Marittima’s medieval history.
Built in the 12th century by the Counts della Gherardesca, the fortress still preserves its keep, the ancient cistern, a crenellated wall with a mullioned window and other remarkable architectural features.
Following extensive restoration, the complex now houses the Rocca Museum, where archaeological finds discovered during excavations are displayed alongside educational exhibits illustrating the history of the medieval village. From the surrounding park, visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the Val di Cornia.

Teatro dei Concordi
Opened in 1867, the Teatro dei Concordi is one of Campiglia Marittima’s most important cultural landmarks.
This elegant Italian-style theatre, distinguished by its elliptical plan and three tiers of boxes, has been carefully restored and returned to its former splendour, once again becoming a vibrant centre for the cultural life of the village.
Today it hosts a rich programme of theatre performances, concerts and cultural events, continuing a long-standing tradition that makes it a key cultural venue for the entire community.
